For hygiene reasons we do not carry vacuums and mops between homes, since that is a good way to move bacteria or bedbugs from one building to another. We ask that yours are available on the day. Converted industrial buildings look great and they hold dust in places a normal apartment does not have — exposed pipework, brick mortar joints, high ledges above the door line. Concrete floors need a different mop than hardwood. We schedule most of north Brooklyn first thing in the morning because parking and loading is a nightmare after ten.

Old plaster sheds a chalky dust that settles on picture rails and the top of every door frame. Original moulding has more edges than modern trim, which means more surfaces to collect it. Parlour floors are usually the original wood, so we keep them damp-mopped rather than wet, because standing water is what ruins a hundred-year-old finish.
