People ask this more than anything else. The answer is all of it. Here is what each one actually means in a New York apartment.
Most gift cards in this city get spent on apartment cleaning, because most of us live in apartments. An apartment is not a small house. The radiator bakes dust onto the wall every winter. The tub has no window over it, so it holds moisture and the grout goes grey. One closet does the work of four. In a pre-war building in Astoria or Sunnyside, plaster walls shed a chalky dust that settles on picture frames and sill tops. In a newer tower in Long Island City the problem is the opposite: sealed windows, HVAC vents holding dust, and floor-to-ceiling glass that shows every mark. We clean both, and we do not use the same approach on both. Ask about Long Island City or Astoria specifically.
A maid service is the standard clean plus everything that piles up between visits. Dishes done, laundry run and folded, bed linens changed, towels swapped, clutter put back where it lives. This is the one to buy for new parents, for somebody recovering from surgery, or for the friend who works ninety hours a week and has not opened their own mail in a fortnight. It is also the version older clients tend to prefer, because the folding and the linens are the parts that get physically hard first.
The checklist and nothing more, priced by home size. A studio or one bedroom usually runs two to three hours with one cleaner. This is the sensible amount to put on a gift card if you are not sure how big their place is, because it covers a full visit almost everywhere in Queens and Brooklyn and most of Manhattan. Kitchen and bathrooms fully reset, dusted, vacuumed, mopped. If they want more than that, they simply pay the difference when they book.
Condos, lofts, townhouses and brownstones. Stairs are the thing people underestimate: they collect more dust than any other surface in a house, so treads, risers and the banister get done every visit. In a townhouse we work floor by floor from the top down, because anything we knock loose upstairs lands downstairs. In a loft it is the opposite problem, one enormous room where the dust has nowhere to hide and every surface is visible from every angle.
The full reset, and the single most popular thing to gift. Everything in the standard list, then inside the oven, inside the fridge, grout scrubbed by hand, baseboards and door frames, light fixtures and vents, window sills and tracks, blinds, and behind and under any furniture we can safely move. Most apartments here need a deep clean every six months. If they cook a lot, have a radiator under a window, or live on the ground floor facing the street, make it every four. Empty rooms hide the most, because the furniture that was covering everything is gone. We wipe inside empty cabinets and drawers, closet shelves and rods, inside the oven and fridge, the gap beside the stove where things fall, and window tracks. Worth knowing your rights here: the New York security deposit statute sets out what a landlord may and may not deduct, and ordinary wear and tear is not deductible.
