Maria S.

Maria S.

Upper West Side, Manhattan · deep clean

Our in-laws were arriving the next morning, and our apartment was in total chaos. Green Hands came to the rescue with an incredibly thorough deep clean, and we were able to relax and enjoy the visit in a sparkling fresh home.

James R.

James R.

Park Slope, Brooklyn · move-out clean

I was moving out of my apartment and didn't have time to scrub the place down. Green Hands sent a punctual team who tackled the grime and dust, and I got my full security deposit back thanks to their meticulous work.

Aisha K.

Aisha K.

Astoria, Queens · nesting clean

We booked a "nesting" clean before my due date, and it was the best decision we made. Green Hands made sure every corner was sanitized and spotless, allowing me to feel calm and ready to bring our newborn home to a fresh, clean nursery.

Maria S. called us from the Upper West Side and asked one question first: what do you actually do? Her in-laws were landing at Newark the next morning. The apartment was clean, but it wasnt guest-clean, and she knew the difference the second she looked at the kitchen. What she wanted before she booked was not a sales pitch. She wanted a list. What gets touched, what does not, how long it takes, and what it costs before anyone rings the bell.

That is a fair thing to ask and most cleaning companies in this city answer it badly. So we wrote this page instead. Every question below is one a real client asked us on the phone, in that order, roughly by how often it comes up. Maria booked the deep clean, then went bi-weekly three weeks later. She still has the list.

We are Green Hands Cleaning Services Corp, based at 22-16 79th Street in East Elmhurst, and we have cleaned homes across Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan since 2015. This is the house cleaning service New York City FAQ: what is included in a visit, what it costs, who comes to the door, what happens if something gets missed, and how the recurring discounts work. Fifteen client reviews are spread through the page so you can see the answers holding up in practice, not just on paper.

One thing worth saying plainly before the questions start. Half of what people call "the place is dusty" in this city is not really dust on a shelf, it is air. Radiators run hot from October, windows stay shut, and everything that settles gets pushed back up. The American Lung Association's indoor air pages are the short version of why a HEPA vacuum and a top-down order of work matter more than how hard anyone scrubs. It is also why our deep cleans wipe some surfaces twice, hours apart, instead of once really well.

If your question is not answered anywhere on this page, call (212) 812-9418 and ask. We would rather spend two minutes on the phone than have you book the wrong thing.

How it works

Four steps, one flat price.

Every review on this page started the same way. Here is the part that happens before the five stars.

  1. 01

Something has a date on it

Guests landing, a lease ending, a baby due, a landlord walking through. Almost nobody calls us because the apartment is dirty. They call because the calendar moved.

  2. 02

    You tell us the home

Size, bathrooms, and how long it has been. Sixty seconds online or one phone call, and a flat quote appears before anyone is booked. Nothing moves after that number.

  3. 03

    We work the checklist

A screened, trained cleaner arrives with everything needed and works top to bottom through the written list. James R. in Park Slope got his full deposit back off the back of this step.

  4. 04

You walk into a spotless home

Floors done, surfaces done, everything back where it belongs. If something got missed, you have 24 hours to say so and we come back free.

Why people stay with us

Five stars twice is luck. Five stars for two years is a checklist.

Your home is kept on one route with notes attached to it, so whoever arrives already knows how you like it done. That is why the standard does not drift from one visit to the next, and why nothing has to has to be re-explained in month six.

  • Background-checked cleaners. Every cleaner is screened and trained on our checklist before entering a home. Thomas G. in Cobble Hill asked for this in writing before we cleaned around his father after surgery.
  • Flat quote up front. Priced by home size and scope, not by the hour, so the number does not move. Slow days cost you nothing extra.
  • 24-hour re-clean. Tell us within a day and we come back and fix it at no charge. Most of the fifteen reviews below never needed it. The ones who did still left five stars, which tells you more than the ones who didn't.
  • Products included. We bring the cleaning products, sprays and cloths, fragrance-free on request. We ask that your vacuum and mop stay in your home.

The checklist

What is included in a visit.

This is the answer to the question we get more than any other. Every visit works through the same checklist, in the same order. We go top to bottom so nothing we knock loose lands on a surface we already finished. Its the same list every visit, and deep and move-out cleans are the standard list plus the items below them, not a different list.

01

Standard cleaning

The recurring visit. Every item, every time.

  • Cobwebs removed
  • Window sills
  • Dusted lamps and lampshades
  • Furniture dusted, polished and/or vacuumed
  • Top of refrigerator
  • Outside of appliances cleaned
  • Inside of microwave cleaned
  • Stove-top and back-splashes washed
  • All sinks scrubbed and disinfected
  • Mirror windexed
  • Tub/shower and tiles cleaned
  • All bathroom counters and fixtures cleaned
  • Wastebaskets emptied
  • Beds made (master and one additional bed)
  • Stairs vacuumed and wood dusted
  • Floors vacuumed and/or mopped
  • All carpeted areas vacuumed

02

Deep clean

Everything in the standard clean, plus:

  • Inside of refrigerator cleaned
  • Inside the oven cleaned
  • Baseboards washed and/or wiped (reachable without moving furniture)
  • Stove-top and drip pans scrubbed
  • All cabinet fronts cleaned
  • All doors wiped down

03

Move in / move out

Everything in the standard and deep clean, plus:

  • Inside of kitchen cabinets (if they are empty)
  • Inside of the closets (if they are empty)

Cleaning products, sprays and cloths all come with us. For hygiene reasons we do not carry vacuums and mops between homes, so we ask that yours are available on the day. If you want fragrance-free or pet-safe products, say so when you book and that is what we bring, at no extra charge. Jessica F. asked for the oven specifically. That sits in tier two, and it is the single item people mention most in reviews.

If you want to compare the tiers side by side before you book, our deep cleaning vs standard cleaning guide walks through which one a New York apartment usually needs, and the NYC move-out cleaning checklist is the one James R. printed before his inspection.

In detail

Every service, explained.

The short answers are in the Q&A below. This is the long version, one service at a time, so you can see exactly what you are booking.

approach

Good reviews are boring on purpose. One written checklist, one price you agreed to before the door opened.

An apartment in this city is not a small house. The radiator bakes dust on every winter. The tub has no window over it, so it holds moisture. One closet does the work of four. We built our checklist around those specifics rather than a generic room list, and we keep notes on your home so nothing has to be re-explained. Most of the questions on this page exist because somebody was quoted one thing and charged another somewhere else. We put the answers in writing so that cannot happen here.

apartments

Apartment Cleaning for pre-war and new-build alike. Two problems, two methods.

In a pre-war building in Astoria or Sunnyside, plaster walls shed a chalky dust that is finer then household dust and settles on picture frames and sill tops. In a newer LIC tower the problem is the opposite: sealed windows, HVAC vents holding dust, and floor-to-ceiling glass that shows every mark. We clean both, and we do not use the same approach on both.

deep clean

Deep Cleaning is the full reset. Everything a standard visit leaves for twice a year.

The standard checklist, then the rest: inside the oven, inside the fridge, grout scrubbed by hand, baseboards and door frames wiped, light fixtures and vents, window sills and tracks, blinds, behind and under furniture we can safely move. Maria S., David L. and Megan S. all booked this one, for three completely different reasons, in the same month.

Most apartments here need one every six months. If you cook a lot, have a radiator under a window, or you are in a ground-floor unit facing the street, make it every four. Book it before guests arrive rather than after, and before you list an apartment for sale, not the week of the open house. See also how often you should deep clean your apartment.

move in / move out

Move in and Move out Cleaning, priced to what a landlord looks at. Which is not what you look at.

Empty cabinets and drawers wiped inside. Closet shelves and rods. Inside the oven and fridge. The gap beside the stove where things fall. Window tracks. Scuffs on the walls where furniture sat. Move-in is the same list with a different reason: the last tenant's cleaner had twenty minutes and a landlord watching the clock.

Worth knowing your rights here. The New York security deposit statute sets out what a landlord may and may not deduct, and ordinary wear and tear is not deductible. A clean apartment and a dated photo set is how you win that argument, which is exactly how James R. got his deposit back. Book seven or more days ahead and code RESET30 takes $30 off. See end of lease cleaning and how to prepare for a move-out cleaning.

recurring

Recurring Cleaning is where the price drops and the apartment stays clean. Every visit, not just the first.

Weekly takes 25% off every visit, bi-weekly 15%, monthly 10%, for as long as you stay on the plan. Bi-weekly is the right answer for most one and two bedroom apartments in this city. Weekly makes sense with kids, pets, or a household where someone cooks every night. Monthly works for a quiet studio, with a deep clean twice a year on top.

Reschedule or skip free up to 24 hours ahead, because everyone has a week that falls apart. Laura B. skips two a year and nobody charges her for it. See custom cleaning plans, bi-weekly cleaning or weekly cleaning.

eco & pet-friendly

Fragrance-free on request, at no extra charge. It matters in a windowless bathroom.

Households with cats, dogs, birds or small kids get the pet-safe set by default once they tell us. Aisha K. asked for it before her nursery clean and Olivia C. asked for it for her mother. One rule we never break, and neither should you: never mix bleach with ammonia or with any acidic cleaner. It produces a toxic gas, and in a windowless New York bathroom that is genuinely dangerous.

If a bathroom in your apartment never fully dries out, the EPA's guide to mold cleanup in the home is worth ten minutes before anyone reaches for bleach, because the fix is usually ventilation rather than a stronger product. See eco-friendly cleaning and pet-friendly cleaning.

Questions

Twenty-two answers, none of them hidden.

No dropdowns. Every answer is already open, because you should not have to click twice to find out what something costs.

What is included in a house cleaning service in New York City?

A standard visit covers the kitchen, every bathroom, all bedrooms and living areas: surfaces dusted and wiped, sinks scrubbed and disinfected, tub, shower and tiles cleaned, mirrors done, stove-top and back-splash washed, inside the microwave, top of the refrigerator, window sills, cobwebs, wastebaskets emptied, beds made, and floors vacuumed and mopped. The full written list is in the checklist section above.

A deep clean adds inside the oven and refrigerator, baseboards, cabinet fronts, doors and drip pans. A move-out clean adds inside empty cabinets and closets.

How much does a cleaning cost, and when do I find out?

Before anyone is booked. We quote flat by home size and scope rather than by the hour, so a slow day costs you nothing extra and the number you agree to is the number you pay. There is no travel fee and no surcharge for a fifth-floor walk-up.

New clients take 10% off with code FIRST10. Current rates are on the pricing page.

How long does a cleaning take?

A studio or one bedroom standard clean runs two to three hours with one cleaner. A two bedroom with two bathrooms is usually three to four. Deep cleans take roughly half again as long, and an empty move-out apartment can run five or six hours because the cabinets and closets are open.

You are paying for the checklist, not the clock, so nobody speeds up at the end.

Do I need to be home during the clean?

No. Most clients arent home during the clean. They give us entry instructions or leave a key with the doorman and go about their day. Tell us how you would like us to get in when you book, and we follow that exactly.

Do you bring your own supplies?

Yes, the products come with us: sprays, solutions, paper towels, cloths and sponges are all included in the price. There is no supply charge added at the end.

Why do I have to provide the vacuum and mop?

Hygiene. A vacuum that has been in six apartments this week is the easiest way to move bacteria, and in a bad month bedbugs, from one building to another. We do not do that, so we ask that your own vacuum, mop and toilet brush are available on the day.

If you do not own a mop, say so when you book and we will bring a Swiffer with disposable wet pads instead, at no charge.

Who will be cleaning my home?

A screened, trained cleaner from our own team, not a contractor we found this morning. We keep notes on your apartment, so whoever arrives already knows you want the balcony door left shut or the cat kept in the bedroom. On a recurring plan we hold the same person for you wherever we can.

Are the cleaners insured and bonded?

Yes. Green Hands Cleaning Services Corp carries insurance and every cleaner is bonded and background checked before their first visit. If your building management needs a certificate of insurance before we can be buzzed in, email us and we will send it the same day.

What if something is missed?

Tell us within 24 hours and we come back and re-clean that area at no charge. There is no form to fill in and nobody will argue with you about it. A text works.

What happens if something gets broken?

The cleaner tells you the same day rather than hoping you do not notice, and we handle it through our insurance. It is rare, and the honest answer is that most breakages happen with things already sitting loose on an edge. If a shelf holds something irreplaceable, say so and we will dust around it instead.

How do the recurring discounts work?

Weekly takes 25% off every visit, bi-weekly 15%, monthly 10%, applied automatically for as long as you stay on the plan. No contract and no cancellation fee. Bi-weekly is the right answer for most one and two bedroom apartments in this city.

Can I skip or reschedule a visit?

Free up to 24 hours before the slot, as often as you need. Travelling for three weeks, hosting, sick, broke this month, whatever the reason. Skipping does not cost you the discount and does not reset anything.

Can you come the same day I call?

Often, yes. Call before about 11am and we can usually reach you that afternoon, especially in Queens and north Brooklyn where most of our cleaners live. Manhattan same-day depends on traffic and what is already on the route. See same day cleaning service.

What is the difference between a standard clean and a deep clean?

A standard clean is maintenance: everything you see and touch in a normal week. A deep clean is everything a standard visit leaves for twice a year, so inside the oven and fridge, grout scrubbed by hand, baseboards, door frames, cabinet fronts, vents, window tracks and blinds.

If nobody has deep cleaned the apartment in over a year, start there and go recurring afterwards. Read deep cleaning vs standard cleaning.

How often should I book a deep clean?

Every six months for most apartments here. Make it every four if you cook most nights, have a radiator under a window, or you are in a ground-floor unit facing the street. Book it before guests arrive rather than after, and before a listing photoshoot rather than the week of the open house. See how often you should deep clean.

What does a move in and move out cleaning include?

The standard and deep lists, plus inside empty cabinets, drawers and closets, closet shelves and rods, the gap beside the stove, window tracks and the scuffs where furniture sat. We finish with a dated photo set you can send a landlord.

Book seven or more days ahead and code RESET30 takes $30 off. See the NYC move-out cleaning checklist.

Do you do Airbnb and short-term rental turnovers?

Yes. Checkout at 11, check-in at 3, linens reset, restocked and staged to your listing photos, with damage flagged before the next guest finds it. Hosts with more than one unit get a single point of contact. See AirBnB cleaning service.

Can you use fragrance-free or pet-safe products?

Yes, at no extra charge, and households with cats, dogs, birds or small kids get the pet-safe set by default once they tell us. It matters most in a windowless bathroom, where anything strong just sits there for the rest of the day.

Do you clean windows, do laundry, or clean inside cabinets?

Interior window glass and sills, yes. Exterior windows above the ground floor, no, that needs a licensed crew. Laundry, linens and dishes come with maid service rather than a standard clean. Inside cabinets and closets is part of a move-out clean, or an add-on any time if they are empty.

Which neighborhoods do you cover?

Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan below 96th Street. That includes Astoria, Long Island City, Sunnyside, Woodside, Jackson Heights, Forest Hills, Williamsburg, Park Slope, Greenpoint, Cobble Hill, Bushwick, the Upper West Side, the Upper East Side, Chelsea, SoHo, Tribeca and Murray Hill. Ask if you are just outside those, we say yes more often than not.

How do I pay, and do you hold a deposit?

Card on file, charged after the visit. You will recieve a receipt by email the same evening. No deposit, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before your slot. Nothing is taken up front to hold a booking.

How do I book, and can I talk to an actual person?

Booking online takes about sixty seconds and gives you a flat quote on the screen before anything is confirmed. If you would rather describe the apartment to somebody, call (212) 812-9418 and you get one of us, not a queue. Email works too, at support@greenhandscleaningservices.com, and we answer the same day.

Still deciding? The fifteen client reviews on this page are grouped by neighborhood and type of clean, so you can find the person whose week looked most like yours. Or start with a single one time cleaning and go recurring only if you like how it went.
