Emily R.

Emily R.

Upper East Side, Manhattan · deep clean

I was totally overwhelmed preparing for my in-laws' first visit and my apartment was a disaster. Green Hands came in and turned my home into a sparkling oasis, making me feel so much more at ease. The deep clean they provided was a lifesaver and the guests were incredibly impressed.

David K.

David K.

Williamsburg, Brooklyn · end of lease

We were moving out and needed a professional end-of-lease cleaning to get our full deposit back. Green Hands was incredibly thorough and detailed, getting rid of all the built-up dust and grime. The apartment looked brand new, and we passed our inspection with flying colors thanks to their fantastic service.

Sarah M.

Astoria, Queens · nesting clean

As a new mom, I was desperate for a "nesting" clean before my baby arrived but had zero energy to do it myself. Green Hands arrived and left my home spotless, focusing on all the important areas like the nursery. It was the most incredible feeling to come home to a perfectly sanitized and fresh environment.

Emily R. called us from the Upper East Side on a Thursday, eleven days before her in-laws landed. She had been putting the apartment off for months. Two jobs, a long commute, a kitchen she cooked in every night and never had a free Saturday to properly scrub. The bathroom grout had gone grey. There was a ring inside the oven she had stopped looking at. On the phone she said the thing we hear more than anything else in this city: "I don't think it's even dirty, I think its just been too long."

That is exactly right, and it is why we exist. New York apartments do not get dirty the way houses get dirty. They get behind. A radiator bakes dust onto a sill all winter. A bathroom with no window holds moisture for hours after a shower. One closet does the work of four. None of that is neglect, its arithmetic. Emily got a deep clean on a Saturday and her mother-in-law asked which building she had moved into. That is the whole job.

We are Green Hands Cleaning Services Corp, at 22-16 79th Street in East Elmhurst, and we have been running a house cleaning service New York families keep coming back to since 2015. This page is about who we actually are: how the company started, who shows up at your door, what we do differently from an app, and how the checklist got written. If you would rather skip to what a visit includes, the house cleaning service page has the room-by-room list.

How we started

Two people, one van, and a notebook of things we kept forgetting.

In 2015 there were two of us cleaning homes in Jackson Heights and Astoria. The notebook came first: every time a client pointed out something we had missed, it went on a list. That list is now the written checklist every cleaner works from, which is why the standard does not drift when a different person arrives.

  • Our own employees. Not contractors bidding on your job. Screened, trained on the checklist, and paid by us.
  • Flat quote up front. Priced by home size and scope, never by the hour, so nobody is watching a clock in your kitchen.
  • 24-hour re-clean. Tell us within a day and we come back and fix it, no charge and no argument about it.
  • Notes on your home. The cat that bolts, the sticky window, the shelf you would rather we left alone. Written down once.

We are …

Green Hands cleaner working through a bright New York loft

… roughly forty cleaners working out of East Elmhurst, most of whom have been with us for years. Several started in 2016 and 2017 and are still on the same routes. Whoever arrives at your door is one of them, trained on the same checklist and reading the notes kept on your home.

How a booking actually goes

Four steps, one flat price.

No estimator visit, no sales call, no surprise line item at the end.

  1. 01

    You tell us the home

Bedrooms, bathrooms, and roughly how long it has been. Sixty seconds on the booking page or one phone call, and a flat quote appears before anything is confirmed.

  2. 02

We put you on a route

Your home gets assigned to a cleaner who already works your block, so travel time is short and the same person keeps coming back.

  3. 03

    We work the checklist

Top to bottom, room by room, from the written list. Nothing improvised, nothing skipped because someone was running late to the next job.

  4. 04

You tell us if we missed something

You have 24 hours. Most people never use it, but the ones who do get us back the next day, and whatever they flagged goes into the notes on their home.

What we get called for most

The four jobs that made us who we are.

  • Empty Park Slope apartment cleaned for a move-out inspection

Move in and Move out Cleaning

David K. in Williamsburg is the reason we started sending a photo set with every move-out. His landlord questioned the deposit. The photos ended the conversation in about a minute.

    • Inside cabinets, drawers, closets and appliances
    • Baseboards, door frames, switch plates, window tracks
    • Dated photo report emailed when we finish
    See move-out cleaning
  • Bathroom fixtures scrubbed during a Bushwick deep clean

    Deep Cleaning

Michael C. in Ditmas Park had allergies he blamed on the season. It was dust and a bit of mould behind a radiator. A deep clean fixed what six months of antihistamines had not.

    • Scrubbed tile, grout and glass, not just wiped
    • Inside the oven and fridge, cabinet fronts, vents
    • Every six months in most apartments here, four if you cook nightly
    See deep cleaning
  • Living room kept tidy on a Ridgewood recurring plan

    Recurring Cleaning

Robert T. in Forest Hills travels three weeks a month. He books bi-weekly and skips the weeks he is away. He has not thought about cleaning since 2022, which is exactly the point.

    • Kitchen and bathrooms fully reset every visit
    • Dusted, vacuumed and mopped throughout
    • Up to 25% off once you set a schedule
    See recurring discounts
  • Fine renovation dust removed from a Boerum Hill apartment

    One Time Cleaning

James B. in SoHo had drywall dust everywhere three weeks after his contractor left. Renovation dust settles again after you finish wiping, so it takes a HEPA vacuum and several passes hours apart.

    • Door frame tops, window tracks, radiator fins, cabinet tops
    • Two passes on every horizontal surface
    • No plan, no commitment, no card kept on file
    See one-time cleaning

The checklist

Standard Basic Cleaning, written down.

This is the list the notebook turned into. Every visit works through it in the same order, top to bottom, so nothing we knock loose lands on a surface we already finished. Deep and move-out cleans are this list plus the items below them, never a different list.

01

Standard cleaning

The recurring visit. Every item, every time.

  • Cobwebs removed
  • Window sills
  • Dusted lamps and lampshades
  • Furniture dusted, polished and/or vacuumed
  • Top of refrigerator
  • Outside of appliances cleaned
  • Inside of microwave cleaned
  • Stove-top and back-splashes washed
  • All sinks scrubbed and disinfected
  • Mirror windexed
  • Tub/shower and tiles cleaned
  • All bathroom counters and fixtures cleaned
  • Wastebaskets emptied
  • Beds made (master and one additional bed)
  • Stairs vacuumed and wood dusted
  • Floors vacuumed and/or mopped
  • All carpeted areas vacuumed

02

Deep clean

Everything in the standard clean, plus:

  • Inside of refrigerator cleaned
  • Inside the oven cleaned
  • Baseboards washed and/or wiped (reachable without moving furniture)
  • Stove-top and drip pans scrubbed
  • All cabinet fronts cleaned
  • All doors wiped down

03

Move in / move out

Everything in the standard and deep clean, plus:

  • Inside of kitchen cabinets (if they are empty)
  • Inside of the closets (if they are empty)

Cleaning products, sprays and cloths all come with us. For hygiene reasons we do not carry vacuums and mops between homes, since that is one of the fastest ways to move bacteria, or bedbugs, from one building to another. We ask that yours are available on the day, and we are happy to bring a Swiffer mop with disposable pads instead if you tell us in advance. Fragrance-free or pet-safe products cost nothing extra, just say so when you book and that is what we bring.

In detail

Every service, explained.

approach

We're rethinking home cleaning. One written checklist, one price you agreed to before the door opened.

An apartment in this city is not a small house. We built the checklist around the specifics: radiators, windowless bathrooms, one closet doing the work of four. And we keep notes on your home, so nothing has to be re-explained the second time somebody comes.

Our standard
Cleaner working quickly through an Upper West Side kitchen
Plant-based cleaning products set out in a Greenpoint kitchen
Cleaner working through a Bushwick apartment kitchen

apartments

Apartment Cleaning in pre-war and new-build alike. Two problems, two methods.

In a pre-war building in Astoria or Sunnyside, plaster walls shed a chalky dust that lands on picture frames and sill tops. In a newer LIC tower its the opposite: sealed windows, HVAC vents holding dust, and floor-to-ceiling glass that shows every mark. We clean both and we do not use the same approach on both.

Stairs and hallway cleaned in a Bayside house

residential

Residential Cleaning for brownstones, lofts, condos and two-family houses.

A house is a different animal from an apartment. Stairs collect more dust than any other surface in a home, so treads, risers and the banister get done every visit. Basements and garages we handle as add-ons, since they need a different order of work than the living floors.

maid service

Maid Service and Housekeeping Service, for homes where surfaces are not the problem.

Some households do not need deeper cleaning, they need the stuff that piles up. Dishes, laundry run and folded, beds stripped and remade, towels swapped, clutter put back where it lives. That is our housekeeping service, and it runs alongside the standard checklist rather than replacing it.

Popular with busy professionals, new parents and seniors. Also see laundry services.

recurring

Recurring Cleaning is where the price drops and the apartment stays clean.

Weekly takes 25% off every visit, bi-weekly 15%, monthly 10%, for as long as you stay on the plan. Bi-weekly is the right answer for most one and two bedroom apartments here. Weekly makes sense with kids, pets, or somebody who cooks every night. Monthly works for a quiet studio with a deep clean twice a year on top.

Reschedule or skip free up to 24 hours ahead, because everyone has a week that falls apart. See custom cleaning plans or same day cleaning service if you need us before 11am today.

eco & pet-friendly

Fragrance-free on request, at no extra charge. It matters in a windowless bathroom.

Households with cats, dogs, birds or small kids recieve the pet-safe set by default once they tell us. One rule we never break, and neither should you: never mix bleach with ammonia or with any acidic cleaner. It produces a toxic gas, and in a windowless New York bathroom that is genuinely dangerous.

The CDC's hygiene guidance covers the basics in plain language, the EPA's Safer Choice list is where we check a product before it goes in the kit, and the National Capital Poison Center explains what happens when the two get mixed. See eco-friendly cleaning and pet-friendly cleaning.

Questions people ask about us

Straight answers, no drop-downs.

Who actually owns Green Hands?

We do. It is an independent company registered in New York, run from 22-16 79th Street in East Elmhurst, Queens. No franchise fee, no national call centre, no marketplace taking a cut of what your cleaner earns.

Are your cleaners employees or contractors?

Employees. They are screened before their first job, trained on our written checklist, and paid by us. That is the main reason the standard holds up over years instead of changing with whoever accepted the booking.

Will I get the same cleaner every time?

On a recurring plan, usually yes. Your home sits on one route. When somebody is sick or on holiday we send a colleague who reads the notes on your home first, so you should not have to re-explain anything.

Do I need to be home during the clean?

No. Most clients leave entry instructions or a key and get on with their day. Tell us how you would like us to get in when you book, and whether there is a doorman, a lockbox or a neighbor holding a spare.

Do you bring your own supplies?

Yes for products: sprays, solutions, cloths, paper towels and sponges all come with us. No for vacuums and mops, since carrying those between homes is one of the fastest ways to move bacteria or bedbugs from one building to the next. We ask that yours are available, or we can bring a Swiffer with disposable pads instead.

What if something gets missed?

Tell us within 24 hours and we come back and re-clean the area free. No forms, no debate. Whatever you flagged also goes into the notes on your home so it does not happen twice.

Are you insured?

Yes, we carry insurance and our cleaners are bonded. If something gets broken, tell us and we sort it out rather than making you chase it. More on that on our insured and bonded page and our guarantee page.

How much does it cost?

Priced flat by home size and scope, quoted before anyone is booked, never by the hour. Recurring plans take 10 to 25% off. See pricing, or just get a number on the booking page in about a minute.

How do I pay, and when?

Card on file, charged after the visit, never before. No deposit to book, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours ahead of your slot.

Which neighborhoods do you cover?

Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan below 96th Street. Most of our cleaners live in Queens, so Queens and north Brooklyn get the widest choice of times. Full list on our locations page, or ask if you are just outside.

Can you come today?

Often, yes. Call before roughly 11am and there is a good chance we can reach you the same afternoon, especially in Queens and north Brooklyn. See same day cleaning service.
